About

Devanand Shanmugam

I graduated from the school of life…as they say, exposed to the highs and lows that it offered. I am interested in various things other than my main passion… cinema, including art and food. I think I discovered art on my own early on, sketching, drawing and painting the people I admired, but considered it a serious hobby just recently.

Born in Chennai and brought up amidst at least ten cinema halls within a five-kilometre radius has left a lasting influence in my art. Imagining myself to be at the centre of my movie world was one thing, but to really be a part of movies became my fascination, passion and ultimate goal. My art is just an extension of this, as I see.

I have consciously widened my exposure to a wealth of movie information and people behind the scenes, by watching an eclectic mix of films in many languages, appreciating all aspects of its origin and making. Art as a media to express my love for movies has shown me ways to fill in the gaps before I become a part of movies myself.

Food has always been a passion for me, and I’ve experimented with all kinds of cuisines, improvising as I go along, guided by my taste buds. I’ve even adventured to create my own recipes that have been well received, or so they say!

Feel free to browse around the various things I enjoy doing, and get in touch if you feel like it. I make friends easily.

Kavitha Shivan

I studied fine arts in India and media production in UK. After many years of happy and contented career as a graphic designer, which continues to be my priority and full-time work in Oxford, I am currently enjoying my new-found passion for art.

I have been a quiet and keen observer of people and things around me, so I find myself doing a lot of things that engage the curiosity of my mind. Graphic design and art don’t go together as they demand disciplines that seem so opposite, and yet, I love the challenges in being able to do things that contradict and have convinced myself that they can exist harmoniously within a person. I love the formality of constraints in design and the freedom of expression in art. I love the logical process of designing a corporate identity and the irrational impulsiveness of creating art. The symmetry of an ambigram surprises me as much as the asymmetry of words in poetry. The designer in me fuels the artist inside in all my doings. My Indian up-bringing exposed to living and working in a foreign land has only left a deeper influence in my appreciation of objects, people, history and time.

As a graphic designer and an artist, my only wish is to make happy pieces of work while I enjoy the process, which is important to me. I want to be able to extend my creative journey to newer media, improve my technique and learn from far and wide. Do contact me if you think I may be able to help you in anyway.
